The wood in both boats is sinker cypress, old growth cypress that was harvested from the late 1800's until the early 1900's but was lost during the logging operations and subsequently sunk. Boat building starts with the recovery of these old logs. Not all are this size but this one is particularly nice
A pirogue finished bright (varnished) looks like this one

Very cool pics!
Buccanners often used pirogue. I would like to build one one day. How long did it took too make them? Very impress by the dugout one.
Probably more difficult to do right? |

thanks for the compliments
a dugout, using hand tools (e.g. crosscut saw, various adzes, hatchets, pull shave, plane, etc) takes about a month depending on the degree of final finish
a plank pirogue takes about 7 to 10 days to build then another 2 to 3 weeks to varnish. Most of that time is waoting for varnish to dry |

I have a birch bark canoe on the building bed right now. Making good progress. Should be done in a few more weeks.
I recently got the ribs bent (34) for the birch bark canoe.

Seedtick,
Love the dugout and Pirogue! What does the bottom of the dugout look like? Round?Squared? (I am currently searching for a log to make one myself...)
